These drawings started as a personal challenge to realistically render objects in graphite after a hiatus with medium and a love affair with acrylic paint. Using my “watch list” on a popular online auction site as quarry for references, the drawings became inspired by sought out discarded antiques, artifacts and rare objects. These objects, whether hand-crafted, rare, or historically significant, do not find themselves in museums with their peers but rather up for auction between private collections. While their price is indicative of their cultural value, how is this worth assigned? By translating these works into graphite juxtaposed with humorous references I aim to interpret their significance through formalism, craftsmanship, and amusement. Where do we draw the line between “antique” and “old shit”?
