Fragments comprises an illustrated inventory of fragmented artifacts alongside endangered fauna. The artifacts depict animals and insects appreciated throughout art history dating from approximately 3300 B.C.E. through the 19th Century. The artifacts become a portrait of biodiversity of different times. They illuminate the reverence of the natural world across temporal, cultural, and geographic regions. All artifacts are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The fauna, illustrated on opposing pages, are listed as currently endangered in New York state by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. As these artifacts are fragments of their respective cultures, the depicted fauna are a fragment of their once abundant populations. The pairing draws attention to the consequence that if these species are not protected they too will become relics of the past. The juxtaposition intends to enliven empathy and accelerate action for endangered species protection and the conservation of biodiversity.
