Feminism of the Upper Air, Janelle Rebel, 2019. Publication: [Belton, TX] Are Not Books; [Sarasota, FL]: Fold to Center

Colophon: The deluxe edition of Feminisms of the upper Air is in keeping with just-in-time production, combining print-on-demand technology and digital fabrication techniques. The enclosure and mandola charms are laser cut and engraved on textured metallic cardstocks. The design combines the old-style serif Arno Pro and the display serif ITC Tiffany with original collages made from photocopied book images of Paleolithic, Neolithic, Medieval, and early Renaissance artifacts.

Janelle Rebel’s activities span artist’s publications, experimental bibliography, critical graphic design, theoretical writing, visual lectures, and exhibition making. Her artist projects have led her variously to study comparative religion and mythology to mine feminine symbols; to track material blanks within Internet culture; and to examine the role of digital surrogates, representation, and exchange. She studied Visual & Critical Studies at the Schoo of Art Institutes of Chicago, Library and Information Science at Dominican University, and Graphic Design at Ball State University. She is currently the head of the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center at Ringling College of Art+Design.
