OUT OF PRINT – in the collection of Temple University Art Library

Another exuberant collaboration featuring San Francisco graffiti ‘Godfather” CUBA (AKA Clarence Robbs), with artist/poet Marshall Weber, legendary binder of artists’ books Sophia Kramer and a cameo appearance by Spirograpghic artist Mary Wagner. The book is courageously designed by Weber with a bold window through both covers and across the spine and fabulously diverse papers and page sizes, gloriously conquered by Cuba’s powerful calligraphy and elegantly bound by Kramer with gold lamé covers – never before seen in the timid world of fine binding. The text is a poem of Weber’s, an allegory alluding to the urbanization of both the environment and human consciousness.

The pages are artworks of Weber’s or curated from his vast paper and ephemera collection. The book is a collaborative collage in three dimensions, as the collage is realized within the structure of the book and fully activated by the reader – page-turn = time.

Cuba is the primary creator of graffiti-style illuminated manuscripts and his unique collaborations are collected throughout the world. He has also painted over 800 large-scale murals throughout the United States, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. Cuba whose practice has often bridged the worlds of community activism, graffiti, and the art world has often been cited as an influence for many of the Bay Area ‘Mission School’ artists as well as other street and activist culture workers.
