This is an exceptionally beautiful book that, using her own words, evokes the exuberance and intensity of Pina Bausch, one of the most important choreographers of the 20 and 21st Centuries.

“There is a talk by Pina Bausch she gave in the awarding of the Kyoto Prize in 2007, in which she wonderfully describes her work: the way of a feeling through the groping, the questions, the work with the dancers, the mutual trust . . . to a finished dance theater piece. I show her in this position you can see in the first woodcut: she looks at her dancers and together they try “to find a language for life.
“In dance, I could express all the feelings that I could not say with words,” said Pina Bausch. Dance as an independent and valid language, a language of the body, the voice, the music, and movement. A language that is indeed “spoken” by individuals who can express something that we all share.
It Impressed me how she describes her work with modesty, accuracy, honesty, and a lot of courage.
This process of creative work applies not only for the dance. My tools are very different with paper, wood, knives, pigments, oil, and a paint roller with which I create textures, shades and lines. But I deal with the same questions and I want to find an expression for the things that happen to me.”
