Dieu Donné Press
"Dieu Donné Press began in 1974 while I was a graduate student of Walter Hamady’s at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dieu Donné means “God Given” in French and comes from the first part of my father’s name, Dieu Donné Francois Gosin. In 1976, the press was moved to New York City and incorporated as Dieu Donné Press and Paper. For the next ten years, Dieu Donné concentrated on creating limited editions of illustrated letterpress printed books and producing archival hand made paper as well as collaborating with artists on original art using the papermaking process. In 1988, Dieu Donné Press and Dieu Donné Papermill were incorporated separately so that while the Press could continue the production of fine books, the not for profit Papermill could find support for increased programs in education, research, and artist services. For the past 15 years, Dieu Donné Press has continued to publish fine artists’ books independently as well as co-publish with Dieu Donné Papermill on limited editions of art and books.” – Susan Gosin. Susan Gosin received her MFA in 1976 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, after studying with Walter Hamady in the book arts and Warrington Colescott in intaglio. She then co-founded Dieu Donné Press and Paperworks in New York City. For more than thirty-five years, she has collaborated with artists and writers as designer and publisher of two and three-dimensional art as well as limited editions of artist books. Her artist books have been exhibited and collected by such institutions as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., and The American Cultural Center, Tel Aviv, Israel. She has been awarded grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and The Tiffany Foundation and in 2006 received the Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphics Council. As a teacher and educator, she has developed curricula and designed studio programs for The New School, NYC, Rutgers University, NJ and Amagansett Applied Arts, NY, The Phumani Archival Mill, Johannesburg, South Africa, and The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt. As a lecturer and panelist, she has spoken at Columbia University, NY, New York University, NY, and the College Art Association Conference, Seattle, WA. She has written numerous articles about the development of contemporary hand papermaking for magazines such as Art On Paper and penned a column for Hand Papermaking magazine about the pioneers in the field. Currently, she publishes new work as President of Dieu Donné Press and serves as Co-Chair of Dieu Donné Papermill in New York City.
